black and orange abstract collage

Every year I donate art to a few fundraisers. The piece above was sent to Ontario to be a part of OCAD’s Whodunnit fundraiser, an event that sells work anonymously. Student work is mixed with alumni and professional artists, but the buyers don’t know what they’ve purchased until it’s a done deal.

I love this type of fundraiser because it allows people to choose art based on what they like and are drawn to rather than making a selection based on what they think is the best investment. Art shouldn’t be about collecting names, it should be about collecting pieces that you relate to.

This collage started as an oil on paper painting of rectangular shapes in a concentric pattern. Feeling that it was lacking something, I tore it into pieces and glued it back together randomly. Part of what I like about collaging is the way the white of the paper comes through and adds another layer of interst. Then I drew on top with charcoal. The last step was to cut the paper into six squares adn re-arrange them. In some ways, this collage led to my most recent paintings.

This year I will also be submitting a painting to UBC’s Art on the Line fundraiser. Stay tuned for details on tickets. This is a very popular event and they regularly sell out!
